Appena qualche giorno fa erano stati aperti dei festeggiamenti tra i cultori dei modelli climatici per l’uscita di un nuovo paper su Nature. Attraverso degli apparentemente complessi calcoli statistici si riconcilia la realtà delle osservazioni con quella delle previsioni, dopo i lunghi ultimi anni in cui la loro distanza è andata sempre crescendo (qui su CM).
Beh, il sipario sulla festa è calato rapidamente a quanto pare. Nick Lewis ha pubblicato sul blog di Steve McIntyre – che di statistica ne sa qualcosa – un post che smonta clamorosamente la tesi dell’articolo di Nature, arrivando al punto di consigliare all’editore di adottare come unica opzione scientifica possibile quella di ritirare l’articolo.
Evidentemente, non volendo fare una cosa troppo ristretta al maligno circolo degli scettici, Lewis ha chiesto il parere di due statistici di professione. Uno dei due ha dichiarato quanto segue:
I metodi statistici impiegati sono così cattivi da meritare di essere usati nell’insegnamento su come non usare la statistica. Tutto quello che questo paper dimostra è che gli scienziati del clima dovrebbero fare qualche corso basico di statistica e Nature dovrebbe dotarsi di qualche revisore competente.
Personalmente credo che per capire bene come stanno le cose ci voglia qualcosa di più di un corso basico di statistica. Chi ne avesse voglia però può andare qui, perché Lewis ha pubblicato la sua analisi passo per passo.
Non sembra sia solo un problema di come i dati a disposizione vengono inseriti nelle analisi statistiche, ma anche dei dati stessi; date un’occhiata:

The way this wholesale manipulation of the official temperature record – for reasons GHCN and Giss have never plausibly explained – has become the real elephant in the room…

Penso anch’io. Dal mio punto di vista decrescerà la confidenza, già non alta, verso le riviste blasonate (vediamo come evolve la situazione).
Ho letto il post di N. Lewis e mi accingo a leggere il lavoro oggetto di confutazione fornito da N. Stokes. Mi sembra che le argomentazioni di Lewis siano piuttosto robuste per cui la vicenda avrà un seguito.Non credo, però, che i termini del dibattito sull’attendibilità dei modelli ne saranno rivoluzionati: ognuno resterà con le sue convinzioni 🙂 .
